Latinitas in El Paso Times

Latinitas was featured in the El Paso Times this past Saturday where volunteer models worked on last minute preparations for the Fashionistas Inspiring Girls Fashion Show. The girls had their pictures taken while practicing their runway walk in Latinitas headquarters. Featured in the article, Latinitas Editorial Intern, Sonia Rangel explained how this fashion show is different from the rest and how it's unique, "It's more than fashion, it's more about culture, why we're proud to be women, why we're proud to be Latinas." El Dorado High School senior Elizabeth Gonzalez was also featured in the article as one of the real-life teen models who volunteered to participate in this charity event benefiting the scholarship funds for Latinitas. Latinitas' executive director, Alicia Rascon, was also interviewed for the El Paso Times article. She described how this event is meant to celebrate the true beauty of being a Latina girl, "The event gives girls the chance to embrace their inner and outer beauty, girls of all shapes and sizes, to celebrate the diversity of what it means to be a Latina and reflect what Latina beauty really means."

Teen Media Academy

For Girls in Grades 9-12

The Teen Media Academy is a full-day multimedia training for high school girls with intensive instruction led by local media producers. The media academy will take place on May 28th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the El Paso Community College Valle Verde Campus (Room A2158) hosted by Latinitas Magazine. Teens will have an opportunity to get tips from the pros and meet a magazine editor, newspaper reporter, photojournalist, radio DJ and TV news anchor. The media training is designed to encourage girls to build confidence and learn how to express themselves creatively through media. With hands-on media workshops, girls will learn about self-expression through writing, photography, audio production, poetry and film-making. During the workshop, teens will also complete an article, photo essay, audio podcast and a video broadcast. Participants will also learn how they can become writers for LatinitasMagazine.org, a digital magazine by and for local Latina youth. Space is limited, so registration is required. To promote girl power, Latinitas is organizing the Latina Power Conference for local middle and high school girls. This event is geared toward encouraging girls to build confidence, discover their voice, express themselves and make wise decisions. The event will feature informative and inspirational workshops, guest speakers, panelists, and multimedia presentations led by local female leaders on topics such as body image, confidence, peer pressure, media literacy, leadership, healthy relationships, cultural identity and bullying. Girls will discuss the challenges facing girls today and explore positive ways to deal with stress through hands-on creative expression activities revolving around poetry, acting, photography, art and song. Girls will also enjoy dance performances and music entertainment. The event is open to girls ages 12-18. Admission is $5 and covers lunch. Space is limited, so pre-registration is required. A few needs-based scholarships are available. The conference is organized by the Latinitas Teen Leadership Institute members. Janette Lujan is a senior at UTEP studying Marketing. As the public relations and event planning intern with Latinitas this past winter, she assisted with organizing and promoting the Chica Power Fest and the Winter Wonderland Fashion Show. She also helped develop fundraising projects as well as publicize the numerous programs Latinitas offers. "I never had this when I was growing up and I know I would've enjoyed it a lot," shared Janette about her motivation to join Latinitas. "I would definitely recommend it to others." Janette also does community service and is a part of professional groups such as the American Marketing Association, and Society of Human Resources Management. Her future goal is to pursue an MBA. "Always stay active in doing the things you love to do and most importantly never give up. Follow your dream!"

We are proud to welcome two new board members. Ana Luz Hernandez works for the Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce facilitating partnerships between the public and private sector and developing the organization's legislative agenda for issues specific to public and higher education. Gracie Cain is the President of Grace Advertising, a full-service marketing and advertising firm. She is a native El Pasoan with experience in business consulting, marketing, event planning, media and sales.

This Spring, girls enrolled in our after-school programs learned valuable lessons ranging from the importance of the civil rights movement to understanding the magnitude of loving yourself both physically and mentally. The girls learned how to express their feelings through poetry and art activities.The clubs encouraged the girls to reflect on MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech and helped the girls create a poem of their own that highlights their own dreams and aspirations. To celebrate Valentine's day, the girls embraced the idea of accepting and appreciating themselves by creating "I Love Me" wreaths with eight reasons why they love themselves. For National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month, our girls discussed unhealthy relationships and the importance of respect as they wrote a poem named "Love is & Love is Not." They also wrote advice columns to each other and created posters about respect. Our members discovered the meaning of a healthy body image and how unrealistic images in the media may influence us. The girls engaged in a magazine critique where they realized that most of the images they see in TV and in magazines are digitally altered. They also created a "Love Your Flaws" photography and poster campaign to embrace what makes them unique and special. Through the rest of the school year, we plan provide even more life-enriching, girl-empowering activities that can make a strong impact in the lives of many young Latinas in our clubs.

Ytzel McDaniel is a high school senior and teen reporter intern for Latinitas Magazine. As an intern, she writes articles for the magazine, creates blogs and produces multimedia projects for our website. She volunteers at the local animal shelter, the El Paso Zoo and community clean-ups. She is also involved with Skills USA, DECA and Key Club. After graduating from high school, she plans to continue her education to receive a masters degree and become a reporter.

Why did you join Latinitas? A good friend of mine interned with Latinitas. She enjoyed it so much and she encouraged me to give it a try. I truly enjoy the friendly atmosphere in the office and how welcoming Marisol and the girls have been.

Why is a program like Latinitas important? Growing up is hard especially with television and magazines feeding young girls 'what they should be.' An organization that promotes self confidence is incredibly important. I hope to gain experience mainly as well as find out if journalism is the correct major for me when I go to college.

Intern Spotlight: Alyssa Romero

Alyssa Romero is a recent college graduate from UTEP with a degree in psychology. She serves as an educational outreach intern and assists Latinitas in developing girl empowerment activities for our after-school programs. Her desire to make an impact in the lives of local youth motivated her to intern with Latinitas. “It is a way for young girls to learn not only about their culture, but helps them to acquire skills that they can use later on in life.” “I think it is important to have a place that young girls feel they can turn to when they need help. I also find it important because it allows girls to express themselves in multiple ways and teaches them that it is okay to be themselves.” In her spare time, Alyssa serves as a youth leader at her church and teaches a confirmation class. Her long-term goals are to get a masters in counseling and to counsel youth.

Jackie Gallinar is currently working as a Saturday Camp Leader and hosting monthly creative expression workshops for girls. Jackie is a social work junior at UTEP and started volunteering with Latinitas a year ago. Since then, she has helped serve as a leader in our after-school clubs and summer camps. Jackie's passion for making a difference is evident when she's working with the girls. Jackie has become a positive role model and mentors for Latinitas. Her favorite part of volunteering is "to see the girls grow as people." She supports Latinitas' mission because she is dedicated to helping girls "build their confidence and to give the girls a sense of belonging."

Festival Promotes Chica Power

What does chica power mean? Girls from Latinitas multiple after-school clubs gathered to promote chica power during the Chica Power Fest on December 4th from 10am to 4pm at the Main Public Libray. Girls described chica power as "young teenage girl who has self-confidence and who has the ability to make smart decisions." Middle school girls built confidence and developed their voice all while having fun at the fest organized by high school girls in the Latinitas Teen Leadership Instititute. The event highlighted panelists, multimedia trainers, and local female leaders. This event was free and intended to help girls in grades 4-8 to become teens who are knowledgeable in subjects that are currently challenging teens.

Intern Spotlight: Yuritzy Ramos

Yuritzy Ramos is a TV/Radio Broadcasting student at El Paso Community College. She is currently working as an Event Planning & Promotions Intern for Latinitas. She is currently helping coordinate a photography exhibit featuring the creative works of Latinitas members. Yuritzy is involved with her community. She has gone to hospitals in Juarez to care of the sick and she has also helped the poor in Chihuahua. Yuritzy decided to intern for Latinitas because she wants to gain experience in the workforce while making a difference and sharing her ideas with others. She thinks that Latinitas is important because it "helps girls to succeed, to become more confident of themselves, to share ideas and to learn more about the right thing to do." Yuritzy's future goals are to graduate and then get her master's degree. She eventually wants to move to Miami to work for a television station like Univision.

Teens Invited to Discover the Leadership Potential

      Latinitas will be starting the Teen Leadership Institute on January 29. The institute will run from January to May, ending with a graduation ceremony. Hispanic girls in high school are invited to join. The cost of the program is $20 and there are a limited number of scholarships available. The institute will help the teens to develop their leadership skills while meeting new friends, connecting with mentors and role models, and completing community service projects. During the monthly workshops, the girls will learn about leadership methods, decision making skills, goal setting, public speaking, civic engagement, and volunteering.
      The requirements for this program include organizing 2 community service projects, completing a minimum of 20 volunteer hours, participating in a training retreat (January 29), participating in fundraising projects, and committing to attend monthly meetings.
      "The Teen Leadership Institute is a great opportunity for Hispanic girls to actively involve themselves with the community while learning valuable leadership skills," says Marcela Aguirre, Public Relations Intern for Latinitas. 1. What made you decide to become a supporter for Latinitas?We strongly believe in their mission to help empower and encourage young Latinas. We held a fund raiser for them.

2. What do you like the most about Latinitas?
Their mission. I also appreciate their quarterly Latinitas fests. I was honored to be the main speaker at the last one held at the public Library & experienced first hand the great impact they have on the girls. At these meetings, the girls have the opportunity to relate to and empower one another.

3. Why do you think it is important for our community to have an organization like Latinitas?
Many people focus on the empowerment of adults and fail to recognize the importance of developing strong, independent, confident future leaders.

Teen Latinitas Fest Helped Girls Become Picture Perfect

Latinitas helped girls ages 13 and up bring out their creative side with the Teen Latinitas Fest on Saturday, November 13 at KOI Studio Productions. This workshop provided hands-on training with photography, audio recording, graphic design, film making, and poetry. Photographer Bianca Cervantes from KOI Studio Productions and Latinitas partnered to provide this free training workshop for young teens so that they could gain knowledge in digital technology. It also helped the girls develop their self-esteem and cultural pride while learning and having fun. This is the first year that Latinitas has partnered with KOI Studio Productions to provide this fun and engaging workshop for the community of young girls in El Paso.

Volunteer Spotlight: Gaby Marquez

Gaby Marquez is currently working with Latinitas as a Workshop Leader for the Latinitas Saturday Camps. On a monthly basis, she helps lead our Saturday Camps by running creative expression activities for pre-teens. Gaby has previously served as a positive role model to girls as a Club Leader at our weekly after-school programs. Gaby was motivated to volunteer with Latinitas "to prevent and reduce the teen pregnancy rate in the Latino community...I enjoy serving my community and would like to mentor other Latinas. I like working with other motivated young women. It is a great experience as well as encourages young girls to succeed."

On December 10, Su Voz Latina Magazine hosted the Winter Wonderland Fashion Show at the Camino Real as a fundraiser to help Latinitas' girl empowement programs and scholarships. The event was a great success with over 150 guests enjoying a fashion show, motivational speaker Bruce Villarreal and delectable lunch from the chefs of Camio Real. The fashion show featured clothing from Trend Society, Bedazzled, Dillard's, and Agua modeled by Bazaar models. The event also consisted of shopping in which local vendors had booths with various items on sale. Among the vendors were Scentsy, Bedazzled, Agua, etc.

"The staff, volunteers, and girls at Latinitas would like to thank Su Voz Latina, especially Jennfier Sanchez, for organizing this fundraiser for Latinitas. Through this fundraiser, Latinitas will be able to continue empowering young girls through its various programs," says Marcela Aguirre, Public Relations Intern for Latinitas. Staff Spotlight- Marisol Guzman

Marisol began working with Latinitas as a Public Relations Intern in the Fall of 2009. Volunteering as an intern, allowed her to get a feel for the hard, yet vital work that goes behind Latinitas’ enriching programs and made her understand the importance of helping and empowering Latina youth. Since then Marisol has received a bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, with a minor in Spanish, from the University of Texas at El Paso and has continued on board Latinitas’ mission as the Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator. Marcela Aguirre is a senior Communication Studies major and French minor at UTEP. She is currently working as a Public Relations Intern for Latinitas. Marcela is currently involved in various honor societies, the National Communication Student Association Student Club, the Brazilian Culture Center, and Catholic Campus Ministry at UTEP. As part of her extracurricular activites, Marcela enjoys dancing ballet, reading, tutoring young children, attending sporting events/concerts, and learning new languages. She decided to intern with Latinitas because she really likes the mission statement of Latinitas and because she wants to gain the experience of working in public relations for a non-profit organization. Marcela thinks that an organization like Latinitas is important because she thinks that "it is important for young girls to be encouraged to be creative and to be encouraged to fulfill their dreams and desires." Marcela's future goals are to obtain a double master's degree in International Relations and Global Communication and eventually work in public relations for the United Nations or for a NGO.

Elizabeth (Liz) Gonzalez is a member of the Teen Leadership Institute. Liz's involvement with this institute motivated her to take on a bigger role with Latinitas. She is now currently working as an Editorial Intern. Liz loves to dedicate her to time with Latinitas making her one of the most involved members. We decided to interview Liz to know what she has to say about her involvement with Latinitas.

What is your role with Latinitas?
Well I am a teen writer, I am part of the leadership and have attended one of the spring camps and also interned in the summer.

How did you become interested in Latinitas?
I think I was seeking for journalism opportunities in El Paso online and I found out about Latinitas.

What do you like the most about being a part of Latinitas?
The atmosphere in Latinitas allows young women to open up and discuss about wide issues, something you might not get, in my experience in other situations working and interacting with other groups, Latinitas are very much alike and have similar ideas about society.

What has been your most rewarding experience with Latinitas?
Definitely volunteering with them has made me learn about social issues that face Latina Women and being a role model toward young middle school girls is beyond rewarding. I am most thankful for just having the opportunity to be part of them.

What have you learned as a result of joining Latinitas?
I have learned about leadership, women empowerment and how to become a influential role model in the community, It has made me more aware of the social change we can take part of instead of you know sitting home on a Saturday doing nothing, there are so many ways you can dedicate your time to. I have learned more about what I want to become in life and how I can create change towards issues I feel strongly about.

How has Latinitas helped you? How have you benefited from your involvement?
I think the creators really do a phenomenal job, I can only think of ways they have helped me endlessly, Latinitas truly has opened up my journalism experience. I applied to the Princeton Summer Journalism and was accepted, It was a not only a beyond thrilling educational experience but I was able to interact with other students and professionals who share the love for journalism. Alicia also helped me apply for the Texas Women's Conference in Houston and that was another amazing opportunity I was able to take part of. Latinitas has taught me how to become a better writer and I learn every day, It allows me to blog about my thoughts and opinions and some place were I can simply express myself. I think it has benefited me in every aspect of my education and goals I have, and changed my perspective of the impact I want to do in life.

What do you hope to accomplish in the future? Any specific goals?
I plan to study English and or political science at a four year college. (Hopefully the college of my dreams) But I really want to broaden my horizons in the East Coast. Write for the paper at the college and really soak up everything I can in college by internships, clubs/groups etc. And then become a awesome journalist! It would be beyond amazing to see myself write for the New York Times, but I think most importantly in my time in El Paso really push for academic change in the minds of students, and who knows, maybe I'll be working for a non-profit group like Latinitas (fingers crossed) The point of all of this is to take what I learned from Latinitas and apply that in my future.

Luis Rodriguez, owner of Ayer Photography, donated his services to Latinitas this past August. He provided Latinitas with a photo shoot for 3 teens who won a back-to-school makeover and photo shoot through an essay contest. We interviewed Luis to see what he has to say about Latinitas.

How did you hear about Latinitas?

I heard about Latinitas because of a contest for empowering woman in which they had a professional make-up session, followed by a professional photo session. I was asked to be the photographer for this contest.

What made you decide to become a supporter for Latinitas?

I try and involve myself with the community as much as possible. By doing this shoot, I feel I'm involved in something greater than I.

What has been your contribution as a donor?

As a donor I've contributed with a complimentary photo session for three Latinitas and a premium lustre 8x10 photo print of the best shot for each model.

What do you like the most about Latinitas?

I like the fact it expands beyond El Paso, including a strong presence in the Austin / San Antonio area.

Why do you think it is important for our community to have an organization like Latinitas?

I believe it is important to have programs to help elevate the confidence in young latina woman so they could be better prepared to handle obstacles in the future.

As your final remark, is there anything specific that you would like to say about Latinitas?

I just want to thank everyone responsible for choosing me as a donor. I appreciate the gesture, and I am here to help in the future if need be.

Teen Latinitas Fest

Latinitas helped girls ages 13 and up bring out their creative side with the Teen Latinitas Fest on Saturday, November 13 at KOI Studio Productions. This workshop provided hands-on training with photography, audio recording, graphic design, film making, and poetry. Staff and Volunteers from KOI Studio Productions and Latinitas partnered to provide this free training workshop for young teens so that they could gain knowledge in digital technology. It also helped the girls develop their self-esteem and cultural pride while learning and having fun. This is the second year that Latinitas has partnered with KOI Studio Productions to provide this fun and engaging workshop for the community of young girls in El Paso.

On November 13, Angela Sustaita, who is the owner of Klothes Lime Buy-Sell-Trade Fashion, helped Latinitas through a fundraiser at her store. For this fundraiser, 50 percent of the proceeds went towards Latinitas' girl empowerment programs and scholarships. Because of Angela's positive contribution to Latinitas, we decided to interview her. Here's the interview with Angela:

How did you hear about Latinitas?

I had the pleasure of working with Alicia and the organization at my past employment at the Nonprofit Enterprise Center.

What made you decide to become a supporter for Latinitas?

My office was a few doors down from the Latinitas' offices. I saw the organization at work first-hand on a daily basis. I was impressed how the organization leverages their interns and volunteers so efficiently and takes advantages of programs available throughout the community. The organization operates in an efficient manner and I knew that although my donations may not be considered substantial gifts, the dollars will go a long way.

What has been your contribution as a donor?

As I was starting my business, my first business expense was a donation to Latinitas. It was a symbol of support to come as well as a blessing for my new venture. On Saturday, November 13, Klothes Lime hosted a benefit shopping day for Latinitas, half of the proceeds for the entire day were donated to the organization.

What do you like the most about Latinitas?

I love the that the organization is constantly seeking new partners and new avenues to gain support.

Why do you think it is important for our community to have an organization like Latinitas?

As a Latina women, I know that I would have greatly benefited from an organization like Latinitas. Growing up, as any other young adult, I dealt with insecurities and the negative pressures that surround us. It is important to empower our youth and bring positive experiences into their lives that will encourage them to be strong, active citizens in our community.

As your final remark, is there anything specific that you would like to say about Latinitas?

El Paso is privileged to have a chapter of the organization in our community. Alicia and the Latinitas team are dedicated and hard-working individuals with a passion to make El Paso a better community. It is vital that we support the efforts of individuals like this because they are hard to come by.

Member Spotlight: Stephanie Clark

Stephanie Clark is a senior at Americas High School. She is currently working as a Teen Reporter for Latinitas. Stephanie is involved with her school newspaper and yearbook. She also takes part in student council, the Key Club, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), and Phi Chi which is an honor society for students in forensic sciences. Stephanie decided to intern with Latinitas after her exciting experience with Latinitas' camp this past summer. She believes that through this internship she can be a leader towards younger girls. Stephanie thinks that a program like Latinitas "is important for young girls, because as young girls there are times where we become very absorbed in society, and we become molds that society has created for in place of who we truly are. Latinitas puts girls back on the track of self discovery as young girls learn how to be beautiful in their own skin, stand up for what they believe in, learn to do what's right and so much more. It's extremely important for girls to have this form of representation." Her future goals are to graduate from high school and go to El Paso Community College to earn an associate's degree. She then plans to transfer to Texas Christian University to obtain a bachelor's degree in Communications. She also wants to get a master's degree in Communications at the same university. Stephanie would like to work as an anchor or reporter during her college years.

Winter Wonderland Fundraiser

Snowflakes, Christmas trees, and hot chocolate are some things that come to mind as winter gets closer. However, fashion should also come to mind as the Winter Wonderland Fundraiser gets closer. On December 10, Su Voz Latina Magazine will be hosting a fashion show at the Camino Real Hotel to benefit Latinitas. The event will take place from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, and it will feature designs from local fashion boutiques. The idea behind this fashion show is not only to help local female business leaders get exposure and network, but to help support Latinitas' vision and mission statement; which is to empower Latina youth. Businesses can purchase a vendor booth that includes 2 tickets or they can just purchase the tickets separately. It must be noted that Su Voz Latina Magazine chose Latinitas among a large pool of candidates to sponsor them through a fundraiser. Youth Take Lead in Drive to Change Our World

We say that the future is in the hands of our youth; that is even more the case in the current age of technology and human advancement. Some of the most pressing problems of our world and our community can be identified and addressed with the eyes of the young; eyes that are clear and bright and optimistic.

Each year, Global Youth Service Day celebrates and mobilizes the millions of children and youths who improve their communities each day through service and service-learning. April 23-25 will be the global celebration of youth changing the world.

Established in 1988, GYSD is the largest service event in the world and is celebrated in more than 100 countries. Targeted toward children and youths between 5 and 25 years old, the world's most critical issues will be addressed by the young in partnership with families, schools, community and faith-based organizations, businesses and governments.

The goals of the campaign are to mobilize youths to identify issues in their communities and develop solutions, to encourage organizations to provide for youth involvement and volunteer opportunities, to encourage media and policy-makers to promote and enable the young to become assets and resources in their communities. In this way, our young people begin a lifelong adventure of service and civic engagement.

Schools and civic organizations are eligible for funding, training and technical support to effectively engage in issue-development, critical analysis and planning to improve our community.

Each year, millions of young people in more than 100 countries participate in GYSD. In 2009, more than 1,200 El Paso youths from local high schools, colleges and community groups participated in GYSD by recycling e-waste, planting trees, giving food to the homeless, and cleaning up parks and graffiti around town.

More than 320 projects are already planned in the U.S., 17 in Texas alone. The United Way of El Paso County spearheads the Global Youth Service Day activities in our community.

One project is Latinitas' Amigas in Action, a service-learning project gathering girls and young women into after-school study groups to identify community needs, develop programs to address those needs and create media projects. Utilizing writing, photography, desktop publishing, graphic art, Web design, filmmaking and audio production, these volunteers will develop multimedia campaigns to raise community awareness and complete written, photo, art, film, online or audio projects distributed online, at schools and to the media.

Across the nation, young people are dreaming community gardens and parks, revitalizing neighborhoods, organizing 3K runs, developing campaigns to fight childhood obesity, planning to promote environmental initiatives and working with local governments to develop policy. One high-school group plans a day-long music fest, featuring youth bands, to raise money and awareness for their year-long project.

It is a good thing to challenge and include our youth in long-term planning for our community; after all, it is their world that they save. And community service activities are always required on college applications.

Leadership institute gives young women step up

EL PASO -- Latinitas will open its first leadership institute this week in the hope of giving women a stronger voice in the community.

According to its Web site, Latinitas is a nonprofit organization "focused on informing, entertaining and inspiring young Latinas to grow into healthy, confident and successful adults." Its digital magazines are made for and by Latina youth.

The leadership institute will start at 9 a.m. Saturday at the organization's headquarters at 1359 Lomaland.

"The girls will attend monthly workshops on leadership methods, decision-making skills, goal setting, public speaking, civic engagement and volunteering," said Alicia Rascon, Latinitas director and co-founder. "I definitely think young women now understand

the leadership roles and our goals are to help them reach their potential and realize their abilities."

The participants will attend monthly classes, go on field trips, meet positive woman role models, learn about their cultural heritage, build confidence and explore their own strengths through exercises and activities, organization officials said.

"We want to help them identify and cultivate their own leadership abilities," Rascon said. "The national levels for the Latino community are very high for dropout, suicide and teen pregnancy rates. We want these young women to overcome those challenges and become agents of change."

Membership is open to female Hispanic high-school students, but space was limited to a group of no more than

30. Rascon said the students will benefit more by working in smaller groups.

"With a small group, the girls can get to know each other and work better," Rascon said. "We can focus and work with these girls to be more involved in their community." Rascon said the students will complete 20 hours of community service and two service projects.

"I am excited for this institute, because growing up, there wasn't a lot of opportunities for leadership," Rascon said. "I'm glad to offer this to girls now."

E-zine connects young Latinas worldwide

El Paso teens Eliana Grijalva, Sara Elizabeth Sanchez and Zyanya Dickey are aspiring journalists. They plan on pursuing degrees in journalism after graduation and are getting their feet wet now by writing for Latinitas, an e-zine founded in Austin in 2002 by Alicia Rascon and Laura Donnelly-Gonzalez.

“There’s not much stuff for journalism in El Paso and I thought it was cool that the magazine gives you a chance, so I got involved,” said Grijalva, 16, a student at the Da Vinci School for Science and the Arts. “I never had any real experience in journalistic writing, but I’ve since learned how to interview, meet people I would never get to meet before and get my name out there as a writer.”

Grijalva is part of Teen Latinitas Council, a group of about 15 girls that meets once a month to discuss articles and blog postings on Latinitasmagazine.org. On the site, writers post articles in six general sections: 411, Fun, Latina Beat, Your View, Real Life and Her Story. Subcategories include beauty, body, money, technology, entertainment, culture, geography and “Mi Barrio.”

First of its kind
Latinitasmagazine.org started as a class project by then-UT Austin students Rascon and Gonzalez.

“At the time we felt there was a lack of media that affected young Latinas,” said Rascon, co-founder and CEO of Latinitas, Inc. “We met with a youth advisory board and received feedback that girls were not feeling represented in their community. The publications ‘Hispanic’ and ‘Latina’ targeted an adult audience; there wasn’t anything specifically for young Latinas. So after the class, we continued on with the project – it was the first of its kind.”

Rascon and Gonzalez also hoped to inspire and mentor young Latinas.

“I was a Chicano Studies minor, and I knew that Hispanics have the highest teen pregnancy rate and lowest high school completion rate,” Rascon said. “We wanted to give them advice as to how to overcome (statistics) and use media as a tool for empowerment.”

Volunteer hours pay off
Latinitas is a nonprofit that thrives on grants, community donations and volunteers.

“The first year, we were able to start the website and pay for our domain with a benefit concert,” Rascon said. “All the writing, editing, designing was done by volunteers.”

For six years in Austin, the site was maintained by hard-working volunteers. Rascon moved back to El Paso in 2008 and started up a Latinitas community in her hometown. Gonzalez still heads the Latinitas community in Austin.

Now the organization brings in $150,000 annually, Rascon said. About 25 percent goes to maintaining the website, and a large part of their funding goes to educational programs, but they are able to offer some staff and paid internship positions.

Latinitasmagazine.org receives about 30,000 hits a month and works with 3,500 middle and high school girls in the publication process – they write articles, take photos and edit. Their reach extends beyond Austin and El Paso to three other Texas cities, plus Las Cruces and Silver City. They were recently featured in an article in Spain and have received letters from Latinas around the world.

In November, Rascon was one of four recipients chosen nationally to receive a new Latina Rising Star award from the National Hispana Leadership Institute (NHLI) at the organization’s annual conference.

“Our goal is to serve more girls in more areas regionally,” Rascon said. “We would like to start a print edition; we’re wanting to make our content more accessible to girls who may not be able to access our site online.”

Invaluable experience
“It’s been really exciting to be able to start pursuing what I want to do so young,” said 17-year-old Zyanya Dickey, a student at Mission Early College High School in Horizon. “I got involved because I thought it was great that they allow teenagers and young adults to join their community.”

Dickey is interested in pursuing a career in magazine or radio. She currently helps edit stories for the Latinitas site.

“Editing is fun – reading other people’s work, you see different perspectives and ideas, but it’s a teaching experience as well,” Dickey said. “And writing is one of the most important means of expression, no matter what language you speak. There’s so many possibilities, it’s really fun.”

Sara Elizabeth Sanchez, a 17-year-old student at Loretto High School says her dream is to write for Newsweek Magazine or a leading newspaper such as the Washington Post.

Last summer, she participated in a Latinitas journalism internship and has continued to write for the e-zine.

“It has definitely improved my journalistic writing style and it has inspired me to speak and write what’s on my mind,” Sanchez said.

Teen Reporter Spotlight: Eliana Grijalva-Rubio

Writing and reading a magazine made for themselves by themselves, our Teen Reporters take a sense of pride and ownership in Latinitas. Readers of the e-zine look forward to anything from reviews and feature stories all the way to celebrity profiles and blogging. High school sophomore Eliana Grijalva-Rubio has found her calling being a Teen Reporter and said she is enjoying the "perks."

"The magazine really puts you right into the middle of the media. I've learned so much about stuff like interviewing and research, and even stuff I normally wouldn't go after, like radio journalism and photography. It's made me feel like a real journalist. And the perks never hurt!" Eliana said.

Just having joined Latinitas this summer, the 15-year-old said participating in Teen Latinitas Council has made her more confident.

"I feel like an actual reporter now, and it's given me the confidence to e-mail random people and ask them for help in my writing. I can really say I'm a writer now, and I feel like I'm a part of something, and like I'm a part of the media," Eliana added.
Eliana attends the Da Vinci School for Science and Arts. She plans to study Journalism and apply to the University of Southern California.

Latinitas interns are a major force in the advancement of our outreach and empowerment of young women. Everyday interns for Latinitas contribute their time and knowledge to different areas of the organization.

Literally transcending the border between classroom and career, UTEP Graphic Design sophomore Lupe Anchondo is using the skills as she learns them in class as a graphic design intern.

Previously a club leader during the spring semester, Lupe applied for a fall internship.

"[Latinitas] gives girls like me great opportunities to expand themselves in a variety of ways," Lupe said.

She has taken advantage of the opportunity and has created bilingual flyers, brochures, and other club materials for Latinitas, trying her hand at new techniques she's learning everyday in her graphics classes. Additionally, Lupe sees this as a way for her to see if graphic media really is her calling.

"I applied for this specific internship because I wanted to get the experience I need to see if this is the career I want to pursue," Lupe said.

Latinitas' interns play a unique, individual part in our success. Working towards the common goal of empowering young Latinas, our interns are committed to the organization and its members. From outreach, writing for the magazine, designing materials, editing, taking photographs, all the way to initiating PR tactics and strategies, marketing, fundraising, creating curricula, or planning special events, Latinitas interns are spreading the word and gaining experience for their own future successes.

Latinitas In the Community: Veteran's Day

Members of Latinitas took to the streets and participated in this year's Veteran's Day Parade held in northeast El Paso.

The parade ran from the YMCA on Stahala Drive and concluded at the Old Glory Memorial with a ceremony.

"I was proud to be a part of the parade and salute our veterans who often go unnoticed and under-appreciated. The response from the community regarding Latinitas' presence was awesome," VISTA-volunteer Claudia Escobar said.

Keeping in mind its audience, Latinitas Magazine staff continues the "for Latina Youth, by Latina Youth" spirit when it comes to the monthly editions of the magazine. Teen reporters write anything that is of interest to them and other Latinas their age. Readers of the e-zine look forward to anything from reviews and feature stories all the way to celebrity profiles and blogging. Loretto H.S. senior Sara Elizabeth has taken on the title of Teen Latinitas reporter in addition to other obligations this year.

"Latinitas introduced me to feature writing, as well as deadlines in an office setting," Sara Elizabeth said.
Just having joined Latinitas this summer, Sara Elizabeth can already add "published reporter" to her resume. The 17-year-old has already written five feature stories for the magazine as well as covered a local film festival.

"This will help me in college because I won't be fresh-faced, like some other students," Sara Elizabeth said.

Her heritage and community are important, the teen said, adding that she finds Latinitas is a great opportunity for her to be more culturally conscious.

"It is important for young women to be involved in their community because they are the future of their community. Latinitas has allowed me to get a deeper look at my gente, as well as the customs that I am surrounded by," Sara Elizabeth added.

The teen recognizes the skills she has learned in the few months she has been involved with Latinitas as vital to her career.

"I would definitely recommend other girls to get involved in Latinitas because it teaches skills that can be used throughout life," Sara Elizabeth said.

Self-awareness is another aspect of being involved in the Teen Council that Sara Elizabeth said she likes.

"Latinitas has allowed me to be more optimistic, as well as enable me to see myself and my goals and say 'I can do it," Sara Elizabeth said.

It is through the thoughtful and charitable time local college students give that Latinitas is able to move forward with its mission. Everyday interns for Latinitas contribute their time and knowledge to different areas of the organization.

UTEP Multidisciplinary Studies' junior Rosana Lopez applies her studies to her internship with Latinitas. Having so far interned for three weeks, Rosana is working on multiple projects including club activity curriculum, and hosting Saturday workshops for our Teen Latinitas Council.

"I knew this internship would help me build relationships in the community and give me the experience in working with young, receptive girls," Rosana said.

She added wanting to be a part of the organization because of what it stands for and could not help but be "excited" to be involved in the Saturday workshops.

"I'm developing lessons that will mold the youth of our community and I think that's important," Rosana added. She also said that she enjoys being part of a team of other young Latinas committed to the community.

"My favorite part is that I belong to a cool team of other interns and volunteers that are passionate about helping young Latinas," Rosana said.

Aside from being surrounded by young Latinas with similar educational, cultural and service goals as herself, Rosana admits that creating enriching educational activies is a challenge she faces in her internship.

"Finding out-of-the-box ideas that will stimulate young girls and including the media piece can be difficult, but thinking about how these will go directly to the girls in our community is what makes it an important and worthy challenge," Rosana said.

Working towards a common goal fo empowering the Latina youth, whether it be in outreach, reporting, designing, editing, taking photographs, initiating PR tactics and strategies, marketing, fundraising, creating curricula, or planning special events, Latinitas interns are truly what make the organization what it is today.

Club Leader Spotlight: Leah Martinez

Club leaders for our after-school programs are at the core of our girls' success. Much like the girls they reach out to, Club Latinitas leaders have overcome obstacles and broken stereotypes to become successful college students and outstanding citizens in their communities. They strive to set the positive examples young Latinas are so desperately in need for today.

Being a club leader is not only contingent upon following lesson plans and taking roll. Club leaders ensure safe and fun learning environments where every member including every club mentor and volunteer feels comfortable enough to gain knowledge, express themselves while growing to become empowered Latinas. Leah Martinez is a club leader for the Ysleta Public Library Branch in the Lower Valley of El Paso.

The UTEP student said she enjoys working with people of all ages, and knows teaching young girls will add her teaching experience.

"I like that the girls really get involved with the material and how honest they are," Leah said.

Despite the joy Leah said she has in leading the group of girls, she does confess to having a few predispositions before applying to be a club leader.

"I had already been in a teaching environment previously but with adults, so I expected it to be a bit difficult with pre-teen and teenage girls, Leah admitted.

But now, Leah said, the girls have blown her away with how well they participate and take active roles in the activities.

"The girls are open to discussion, writing and love taking pictures," Leah added.

Latinitas club leaders help bridge the gap between young Latinas and other peers their age. Providing a strong core for Latinitas volunteers and Club Latinitas members, leaders continuously put in the effort to assure all receive quality educational and culturally-focused experiences from club meetings. Setting an example and mentoring young girls, these leaders balance jobs, school, and club meetings, making them true inspirations.

Partner Spotlight: UTEP Center for Civic Engagement

Giving college students the opportunity to gain service-learning experience, the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) at UTEP has included Latinitas as one of its service project offerings.

"The ultimate goal of the partnership between the CCE and Latinitas is to have UTEP students be able to correlate what they are learning in their course to what they are doing while participating in the program. As well as the UTEP student providing a service to Latinitas that allows for the organization to meet their goals and mission," Jennifer Rodriguez, Service Learning Coordinator for the center, said of the year-long partnership.

Known as "Reflection," students who volunteer through the center are not only able to recognize their impact on the community and the organization, but also on their own careers and education. While working with Latinitas, student participants become club mentors to dozens of young Latina girls around El Paso at Club Latinitas sessions held in public libraries around town. UTEP students participate in "group discussions, mentor participants, provide girls with direction, serve as role models, guide activities and help with set-up and breakdown," Rodriguez added.

One CCE member that volunteered through Latinitas earlier this year described her experience as one she will not soon forget.

"It taught me to be a role model for the girls. It made me happy to be someone that they can look up to," the volunteer said.

National Latina Rising Star Award

Latinitas Co-Founder Alicia Rascon accepted the Bright Stars of Tomorrow Award on November 6th in Albuquerque. The award, presented by the National Hispana Leadership Institute (NHLI) , is the first of its kind to be given at the Mujer Awards and Leadership Conference.

The award was created to highlight the accomplishments of Latinas under 30 in all sectors including public, private and non-profit. "Moreover," added NHLI Program Manager, Evelyn Garcia-Morales, "recipients are being honored because of commitment and service to the Latina/o community through the work they do."Garcia-Morales also said Alicia was chosen as a recipient because "her visionary efforts have impacted hundreds of girls."

While at the conference, Alicia met and was able to network with many Latinas from across the country. She also had the opportunity to meet CNN correspondent Soledad O'Brien who received an award after a special screening of the special she hosts on Latinos, as well as author of the "Dirty Girls Social Club," Anisa Valdes-Rodriguez.
"It was inspiring to meet so many powerful and talented Latinas. I left the event feeling energized and empowered to continue to create positive change in my community," Alicia said.

Intern Spotlight: Loida Martinez

Giving local college students the opportunity to contribute to the organization, Latinitas internships are as diverse as the interns themselves. EPCC public relations sophomore Loida Martinez, applies her studies to her internship with Latinitas. Having interned for a month so far, Loida is working on multiple projects including outreach, spreading the word about Latinitas' programs and making media contacts.

"I get to get more girls into the clubs and learning as I'm doing all of this," Loida said.

Also a Latinitas club leader at Clardy Public Library, Loida made the transition from club mentor last spring to now leading this semester.

"I wanted to see how Latinitas works. As a mentor, I didn't get to see the background of a non-profit..." Loida added.

Aside from learning the ins and outs of how non-profits function and learning how to effectively execute a PR plan, Loida has her internship and club-leading duties to thank for forcing her to be more organized.

"It's difficult. It's about having time for everything, knowing what you have to do, and staying motivated," Loida admitted.

She said she enjoys working towards something positive and informing the older group of Latinitas about what the club has to offer them.

"I want [teen Latinitas] to know it's for everyone. They can have fun and be part of a club that is exclusive for them, so they can have a positive path," Loida said.

Staff Spotlight: Claudia Escobar-Lopez

What originally began as a move to be more involved in her community, Latinitas' resident volunteer, Claudia Escobar, has now switched roles to an AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) member within the organization.

As a VISTA, Claudia is now responsible for organizing after-school programs, club leaders, volunteers, building the club curriculum, and spear-heading the volunteer training.

"I began with working with Latinitas last year as a club mentor and then became a club leader at Clardy Fox and Judge Marquez Libraries,"Claudia said.

Claudia received her Bachelor's Degree in Sociology this summer and wanted a way to continue to serve the Latina youth full-time.

"I wanted to stay involved but at the same time find a way to be able to support myself," Claudia said.

With the help of Latinitas co-founder Alicia Rascon and a collaboration with AmeriCorps, Claudia is now able to continue her passion to give to her community and "empower and inspire Latinitas by creating a culturally and language-sensitive club curriculum," Claudia said.

Currently, Claudia is working on adding more bilingual content for the clubs and organization materials.

Furthering our partnership with the Nonprofit Enterprise Center, (NpEC), Latinitas has been chosen to receive pro-bono capacity building consultation. This will provide training, strategic planning assistance and professional development for our staff.

"We are happy and grateful to be receiving help from our neighbors here in the One Stop Center. With their strong support, we are helping to build a strong foundation for Latinitas' growth and bright future" Latinitas co-founder Alicia Rascon said.

Through a grant provided by the Meadows Foundation, which was established to serve the people of Texas, Latinitas will now be able to serve more Latinas and in smarter ways.

"Being as close as we are, we are now better able to address the needs of Latinitas and help the organization create better relationships with donors, and reconnect with past volunteers to capture an audience that already wants to help," Terry Minjares, Program Coordinator for NpEC said.

Latinitas was chosen to receive help from the grant because of its grassroots approach and already established structure within the community, Minjares added.

With the ultimate goal of expanding Latinitas, Minjares said the program will not only increase the organization's following but assure that Latinitas' mission to empower the Latina youth is accomplished.

Teen Reporter Spotlight: Cassie Barraza

Latinitas Magazine boasts a "for Latina Youth, by Latina Youth" attitude, and with it comes it's Teen Latinitas Reporters who write anything from book reviews and feature stories, all the way to celebrity profiles and blog entries.

"I am currently working on my first projects: making a video for Latinitas... making a PSA for teen Latinas about teen pregnancy and writing an article on teen activism," Teen Latinitas Reporter Cassandra Barraza said.

The Mission Early College student is new to Latinitas and said she likes what the organization stands for and finds reporting for the magazine a great opportunity to learn more about her major, communication.

"I think this will help me to learn my abilities and strengths. It is helping me by getting me to write more and think creatively in a way that connects to my culture," Cassandra said.

Additionally, this 18-year-old Latinita claims that it is important for Latinas to have a positive impact in their communities: "Because if we don't, who else will? And by doing so, we make the Latina population stronger."

The Teen Latinitas Reporter has been contributing to the online magazine for two weeks, submitted a feature highlighting teen drivers and the dangers of text-messaging, as well as maintained regular blogs entries on www.MyLatinitas.com.

"It has made me conscience of my culture, the way people see me, and made me look for things in the world that tie back to my culture. " Cassandra added.

As part of the accelerated high school curriculum she is currently enrolled in, Cassandra will be receiving her Associate's Degree from EPCC this December.

Club Leader Spotlight: Cristina Chavez

A vital part of Club Latinitas, club leaders provide the guidance and set the examples necessary for young Latinas to find success and remain engaged in their educations.

Club leaders are not only responsible for the execution of the club's activities, they are also responsible for assuring that members as well as mentors gain from the experience and have fun while in a learning environment.

Cristina Chavez is a club leader for the Judge Marquez and Memorial Park Public Library Branches.

Cristina credits her involvement with Latinitas with teaching her the importance of service to the community and how much of a difference the simple act of involvement imposes.

"The best part is working with the girls and realizing how positive of an influence you can make on them," Cristina said.

Like many of her club-leading peers, Cristina started as a club mentor in the spring and has now taken on the full responsibility of not one but two of the Club Latinitas programs.

But despite Cristina spearheading two clubs and studying full-time, this Latinita said she enjoys working with the groups and helping empower young minds.

"It's a great organization, and it's unique because it is teaching young girls to be empowered through the media. It's a great cause, and it's a lot of fun!" Cristina said.

Latinitas Launched New Social Network - MyLatinitas.com

The newest excitement for Latinitas followers is its new networking site, MyLatinitas.com. The site already has over 90 members from El Paso, Austin, and even New York have already singed up to connect to the beta site with other Latinitas readers and volunteers. Girls can join a safe, moderated online community where they can share photos, upload videos, add music, join discussions, add friends, create events, build groups and post blogs about several topics of interest to young Latinas.

One of the most popular blogging themes includes President Barack Obama's presidential inauguration. As various members tell about the exhilarating feeling that many Americans felt when witnessing this historic moment, one user told about her negative experience involving a schoolmate. This site is useful for initiating such discussions among Latinas that as ethnic minorities are likely to affect our experiences.

Other blogging topics have included entertainment, such as book and film reviews, as well as opportunities to apply for scholarships and organizations. Many members have also used to the site to post blogs about personal interests, and have been able to network with other Latinitas.

In addition to providing an outlet for creative expression among Hispanic girls, the site also features articles written by LatinitasMagazine staff and interns.

Teen Latinitas Council: The Next Generation of Latina Media Makers

Latinitas’ mission "To empower Latina youth through media and technology", is on the move with the Teen Latinitas Council. Composed of 15 teen reporters, the TLC works with some of today's most advanced media to empower themselves and other teen Latinas in the U.S.

Our next generation of Latina media makers works to become more proficient in photography, radio journalism, website design, blogs, film production, poetry, interviewing, advertising, and marketing. By keeping up with the savviest technological media trends, members of the Teen Latinitas Council are preparing for their careers in journalism, as they are mentored by professional journalists who aid them in gaining the necessary tactics and resources to work in such a competitive field.

“My career goals are to one day work with a big time magazine or become a news anchor or reporter”, confesses Amber, a dedicated member of TLC. “I hope to gain the experience and skills that I will need in the future to follow my dream.”.

These skills are learned through a creative process in which the teens get to explore each medium and receive assistance and training to improve their proficiency. In addition to creating their own media, the Teen Council members act as advisors to Latinitas’ editorial board by pitching ideas and evaluating the effectiveness of the webzine. This group is already setting the agenda for what thousands of Latinas read on a monthly basis by contributing constantly to the TeenLatinitas.com- the first digital magazine created by and for teen Latinas in the United States.

This volunteer internship opportunity allows teens to take on leadership roles and use media as a tool for social justice and cultural awareness. Another primary goal for the Teen Latinitas Council is to shape positive experiences for all Latinitas and promoting Latina pride and a positive image of the culture. The council does this by engaging in media events, such as interviews with musicians Los Lonely Boys, celebrities like America's Next Top Model winner Jaslene and author Isabel Allende. On the webzine, the Teen reporters express their views about geography, Latina history, role models, school and beauty.

Our Father's Foundation Helps Make Expansion of Club Latinitas Possible

This month, Latinitas begins the expansion of Club Latinitas, the after-school program that began its efforts to serve several communities in the Fall of last year. Thanks to a grant provided by the Our Father's Foundation, Latinitas will be able to expand its after-school programs to a total of 11.

The Our Father's Foundation is a family-based organization that was founded in 2003. Through its efforts, OFF has already helped over a dozen non-profit organizations in El Paso, with a mission to fund programs that empower women and children.

"The Dos Mundos,Mil Lentes Project" is a 24-hour photography

previously been displayed at City Hall and the Abrazos Gallery at the Chamizal, where they are currently available for sale. The remaining
photos will be exhibited and auctioned at La Fe Cultural Center and

Students Dedicate Time through Praxis and Center for Civic Engagement

Jacqueline Quinones, Senior Electronic Media major at UTEP, is excited to continue volunteering with Latinitas this Spring. Quinones is one of several UTEP and EPCC students who chose Latinitas as her Service Learning project for the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) and Praxis- campus programs that aim to enhance student learning through community involvement.

So far, 20 students have been connected to Latinitas through these programs, contributing a total of 400 hours of volunteerism to Club Latinitas, Saturday workshops and other special events. Not only do CCE and Praxis allow students to receive class credit for their work, these community network programs also serve as link tfor students to gain a positive volunteer experience.

Students who sign up for these programs have the ability to practice their leadership skills, act as mentors and accompany young Latinas through an empowering process.

“It was a lot of fun,” said Quinones. “As a volunteer my task was to help with the day’s activities and to converse with the girls about anything they had on their minds. We talked about school, elections and how we are portrayed as Latinas."

Students who volunteer through the Center for Civic Engagement must complete a 1.5 hour training session and can choose from a flexible schedule to complete their volunteer hours with Latinitas. Although 20 hours is the minimum, other students like Quinones have decided to stay on board as volunteers with the organization.

“Joining Latinitas was one of the best decisions I've made with a rewarding experience. Actually, I'll be volunteering again this semester and encouraging other students to join as well,” added Quinones.

Alianza Para Latinitas Aims to Raise Funds and Awareness

From organizing fundraisers to raising public awareness, the Alliance for Latinitas has remained active in executing tasks that have helped to expand Latinitas’ programs in El Paso. This auxiliary group is responsible for coordinating and executing presentations, volunteer fairs, cultural celebrations and other events. The group of leaders that makes up the Alliance for Latinitas is especially focused on increasing funding for scholarships that benefit the educational endeavors of Latinas in our area, as well as their ability to participate in the programs that Latinitas has to offer.

Ginger Pineda Raya, the Chair of the Alliance explains, “our volunteer-driven organization, relies heavily on creative and effective fundraising in order to raise community support for girl empowerment initiatives.” Past fundraisers that the Alliance for Latinitas has organized include a walk-a-thon, a bachelor auction, and a benefit concert, all which involve much organization and the involvement of volunteers from the range of branches that make up the structure of the Alliance for Latinitas- such as the marketing, public relations and event planning committees. Currently, the Alliance for Latinitas is occupied with organizing the Dos Mundos/Mil Lentes auction, an event which will consist of auctioning a series of photos that were taken to portray life on the border and will take place on March 6th.

At the same time, this group is working to raise public awareness about Latinitas and increase the membership of the Alliance by hosting informational events and socials, including their recent mixer on Tuesday, February 17th from 5-7:30 pm at El Parque Restaurant on the east side. Latinitas Selected As Beneficiary of Photo Exhibit

A tale of two cities - El Pasoan seeks 1,000 people to document border life

El Paso photographer Tim Holt has been documenting the El Paso/Juárez region for more than 24 years and he's always amazed by what catches his eye. "This is a really cool place in which we live and most of the time, we don't realize it," Holt said. "El Paso has become a lot more colorful over the years. It's a much happier place than when I was younger." Holt is inviting 1,000 photographers -- anyone with a digital camera -- to share his passion and participate in the upcoming photography project "Dos Mundos/Mil Lentes" ("Two Worlds/A Thousand Lenses"). Through "Dos Mundos," Holt hopes to create an hour-by-hour account of life in this vast borderplex. "By getting people to look at the city in a different way, through a camera lens, more people might see how exciting El Paso is," he said.

Holt also is the founder of two photography groups in El Paso: Photo Enthusiasts of El Paso (PEEP) and MegaPixels. It was through PEEP that Holt also organized the "Drive-By Shooting" photo contest that encouraged photographers of all levels to drive through the streets of El Paso and, using a disposable camera, take pictures of their surroundings. The popular photo contest lasted about eight years, but Holt recently decided that contest had run its course and decided to do something involving the sister cities of El Paso and Juárez.

The goal is an ambitions one: to recruit 1,000 photographers on both sides of the border to document life in El Paso and Juárez during one 24-hour period, starting at noon Aug. 9 and ending at noon Aug. 10. Photographers can be professionals as well as anyone with a digital point-and-shoot camera. The only requirement is that a digital camera be used, Holt said. Participants will be assigned one hour within the 24-hour period to ensure that the entire day is well-documented. Participants will then submit their 10 favorite images to Holt who will, in turn, select a final collection to exhibit in the region.

The exhibit also will be a fundraiser for the nonprofit organization Latinitas, an online magazine (www.latinitasmagazine.org) geared toward young girls and teenagers. The organization also will be granted permission to use the images from the exhibit for one year to try to raise additional money for Latinitas. Alicia Rascon, Latinitas co-founder and chief executive officer, said this photography project goes hand-in-hand with the mission of the online publication. "This is such a wonderful project because it really resonates with us. We're all about highlighting bicultural Latinas and living within two different cultures. This really matches our mission," Rascon said. Rascon said the organization will organize traveling exhibits in both El Paso and Juárez and will ask for a donation. Additionally, she plans to sell postcards featuring some of the images from the project with the proceeds all going toward media enrichment programs for young girls. "Thanks to this project, we'll be able to do more outreach and even offer photography workshops where young girls can create their own photography." There also will be a mini-contest for young Latinas, Rascon said. She's going to encourage these girls to take their own photos and some of the images will be submitted to the larger "Dos Mundos" project.

Holt said he'd still like to get 1,000 people to participate in the project. So far, only 50 have signed up. The fact that Juárez is currently experiencing murderous violence because of feuding drug cartels might have something to do with the low turnout so far, but Holt said he's also inviting Juarenses to participate and photograph the positive things about the city. "People are still living their lives over there. They're going to the store, going to church. Here's our chance to say, 'Here's the good side of life in Juárez,' " Holt said. "We want this project to highlight the good side of both El Paso and Juárez."

El Paso photographer Leland DeFord is helping Holt organize the event and said it's important to keep the images positive. "It would be very easy for me to go Downtown and photograph transients in alleys, but we want to show these cities in their best light and highlight everything that's good about this community." Holt said he's also seeing a renewed interest in photography and he credits the accessibility of digital cameras for that. "It's really exciting to see that photography resurgence," he said. "I'm seeing a lot of younger people getting involved, too." And for this project, Holt said, anyone can participate. In fact, over the years, he said some of the most amazing images he's seen have come from non-photographers. "Some of the coolest things I've seen have come from students and novices," he said.
